Could a fixed mindset be holding you, and your team, back at work?

Your mindset is the collection of thoughts and beliefs that shape how you view the world and how you view yourself.

It’s like your internal blueprint that defines how you operate in the world.

And its likely you will either have a mostly fixed or mostly growth mindset, and this will have an impact on every thought you think, action you take, and the level of growth or stagnation that you are experiencing in your life.

The concept of fixed and growth mindsets was coined by Carol Dweck, leading psychologist and author of the book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success.

The notion is that those with a fixed mindset believe their level of talent and intelligence are fixed and cannot be changed whereas those with a growth mindset believe that talent and intelligence can be improved.

When I learned about this, and the characteristics of each mindset, I had a massive light bulb moment and a horrible realisation that I had been living with a fixed mindset for most of my life, and it was massively holding me back in the way I work and live.

See whether any of these resonate with you….

With a fixed mindset work can be really hard as everything revolves around the result we get, or how we are perceived by others.

We miss the joy of taking part and can’t bear the thought of ‘failing’ because we assume that means we are nothing, no-one, if we do.

The benefits of encouraging a growth mindset culture

As a Manager it’s useful to know about your own mindset, and also to be aware of the mindset of your team.

Cultivating a growth mindset culture will have many benefits such as:

– Encouraging creativity
– Raising potential
– Improving relationships
– Enhancing communication
– Inspiring growth
– Improving performance

So how do you change from a fixed to growth mindset?

If any of those fixed mindset characteristics resonated with you, fear not, we have the ability to shift our mindset and move from a fixed to growth mindset.

    •  The first step to change is AWARENESS. Simply noticing that you are coming from a fixed mindset perspective can be enough to make that shift and consciously choose a growth mindset instead.
    • The more aware we are of our own thoughts, attitudes and beliefs, the more empowered we become as we have the power to choose our thoughts and change our minds.
    • As you move about your day check in regularly and ask yourself if you are coming from a fixed or growth mindset?
See if there is room to make a change towards a more expansive, and ultimately more empowered state of mind.
